The Numbat is a small marsupial, found in Western Australia, with a diet consisting primarily of termites.

It is a threatened species (currently classified as "vulnerable"), and the Perth Zoo has been breeding Numbats successfully for release into the wild since 1986, as part of it's Native Species Breeding Program.

By early 2007, the Perth Zoo had provided 110 Numbats to the Department of Environment and Conservation for release into protected habitats.

The Department of Environment and Conservation, with its Western Shield program, is working to prevent the extinction of a number of native animal species by reducing the number of introduced predators, such as the fox and the cat, and to-date, this program has been quite successful.
