DLink DSL-300G GenII ADSL Modem and Smoothwall
This page provides information on configuring a DLink DSL-300G Generation II ADSL
modem with Smoothwall.
DSL-300G
The DSL-300G Generation II
ADSL modem is a very new modem from DLink.
It has a single 10/100Mbps ethernet port for connectivity, as well as having a
DHCP server, PPPoA and PPPoE clients, and a web interface for configuration and adminstration.

Configuring With Smoothwall
The DSL-300G is very easy to configure for use with Smoothwall, as it is a bridged
modem with a built-in DHCP server and PPPoA/PPPoE client.
Once it has successfully authenticated to your ISP, it'll pass your public IP address
to Smoothwall's red interface via it's DHCP server.
Note that the DSL-300G's default IP address is
10.1.1.1 with a netmask 255.0.0.0.
As a result, you need to ensure your green and orange networks do not use addresses
that overlap this IP address, as that will prevent you from being able to access
the modem's web interface through your Smoothwall.
Configure Smoothwall's red interface for DHCP, and connect the modem's ethernet
port to your Smoothwall's red interface using a straight-through cat5 cable.

red interface configuration
Using a browser on a PC your green network, go to the modem's web interface
(http://10.1.1.1).
Enter your ISP username and password, and hit the Save & Reboot
button to save the changes, and the modem should connect after rebooting.

account configuration
Note that I had to change the security protocol from the default CHAP
to PAP, in order for it to connect to my ISP
(iiNet).
Depending on your ISP's authentication requirements, you may also need to make this change.
After my ISP installed their own DSLAM in my exchange, they recommended I switch from the default
PPPoA VC-Mux to PPPoE LLC.
Blocked Ports Inbound
When operating in PPPoE or PPPoA mode, the DSL-300G blocks inbound connection attempts
on TCP port 23 (telnet) and port 80 (http).
This will cause issues if you want to publically expose a telnet or webserver behind your
DSL-300G modem.

Excessive DHCP Lease Time
After experiencing several instances where Smoothwall would be isolated from the
DSL-300G modem after a brief ADSL outage, some investigation found this
was apparently due to the excessively long DHCP lease time of the DSL-300G's
internal DHCP server.
