discussion, gear, and photography journal
Here's a photo of my youngest daughter, while engrossed in her toys. While processing this photo, I tried converting it to black and white, but it didn't look right. However, desaturating it seemed to work better with this particular photo, so here's a desaturated version:

For reference, here's a full colour version, with the saturation slightly boosted to highlight the colours of the wooden blocks on the left hand side.

Which do you prefer? The full colour version, or the desaturated version, and why? Please leave a comment below indicating your preference and your reasoning.

I'd vote for the desaturated pic. It really focuses attention on the light and dark contrasts, and by bringing out the soft pink it enhances the composition and gives the suggestion of a black/white photo, without it being one. Lovely picture!
Without the desaturation, it's still a good picture, but it looks like so many kid photos, the post production editing makes it stand out and gives it immediate appeal.

I would have to agree with pretty much everything Richard said, however, the original photo is a pretty good snap as well but the more I look at them, the more I change my mind. I guess it would depend more on if you wanted to use it for something, what that something would be.

I like the desat version best as it takes my attention to the subject (your daughter). The full colour version draws my attention to the blocks.

Great photo either way!

Thanks for the comments.
I think Adrian summed it up - the full colour version has too many distracting components, while the desat version draws the focus centrally.
