The early morning sun highlights the Paddle Steamer Decoy at the Mends Street Jetty,
as a pelican swims past, with the Perth city skyline in the background.

@Adrian: thanks for the comments. I wanted to keep the entire Decoy in the frame, as well as as much of the city skyline as possible, to ensure the skyline was recognisable as being Perth (ie, I didn't want to crop out the BankWest tower). One of the results of this is that the Decoy, pelican and city are somewhat small, due to the width of the resulting composition. However, I have a number of other similar shots that were framed slightly differently, including some shots taken from a location more to the left, which provides a much tighter framing with the Decoy closer to the city skyline. I'll post some of those shots in the next day or two. Richard wrote at 2008-10-21 20:23
Actually one of my first thoughts when I first saw this image was that it has a slightly panoramic aspect to it. The paddleboat, cityscape and pelican are all good subjects of interest, and the lighting on the boat makes it the primary focus and draws the eye - I think this works well. I don't think I would change the cropping, I think the image works nicely as is. Great shot! JaneRadriges wrote at 2009-06-14 11:17

I like the way you have captured the city in this shot (as opposed to my tighter crop here)
However, I wonder how it would work out if there was less sky and thus utiliising more vertical space for the city/decoy. I feel that the subjects (decoy/city/pelican) are a little too small. This would lead towards a panoramic aspect though.
