discussion, gear, and photography journal
This evening I got together with some fellow photography enthusiasts, and had some fun with steel wool spinning on the beach right next to the abandoned power station in South Fremantle.

We started spinning with the old power station in the background.

We then turned in the opposite direction, to make the most of the sunset colours in the sky.

The three photos shown here are all self-portraits. I had my camera set up on my tripod, and once I started spinning the steel wool, I would trigger my camera remotely with my Phottix Plato wireless shutter release.

Thanks to everyone who turned up to the shoot today - it was a lot of fun!

It was a good turn out and lots of fun despite the obvious :)

Aside from the showers of sparks, what accounts for the appeal of steel wool spinning in photography circles? The central bright circular point which is the source seems to create a point of distraction from the rest of the photograph.

@Richard: the steel wool spinning appeals to photographers because it allows them to capture some very interesting long exposures.
