discussion, gear, and photography journal
Here's another photo from last week. There were quite a few darters (often mistakenly called "shags" or "cormorants") along the river's edge early in the morning, drying out their wings in the sun.

The sunlight on the feathers on the outstretched wings drew me to this bird, so I got down low to get the Perth skyline in the background.

While I've previously indicated I wasn't sure how useful Liveview would be on my new Canon 50D, in this situation, I found it useful, as I had the camera on the grass, and used Liveview to compose the shot, rather than having to lie down to get my eye to the viewfinder.

One of the last steps of post-processing this image was the application of an action called "Vintage Gold". It's one of the actions included in Mulletgod's free photoshop actions.

I quite like the result of the Vintage Gold action on this image. What do you think? Does it look over-processed? The same image without the Vintage Gold action can be seen here:

The first image is available for purchase as a high-quality card, matted print, mounted print, canvas print or framed print from redbubble.com.

Fantastic picture! A combination of several superlative elements here:
- lighting: the detail of the feathers and wings is outstanding
- depth of field: the contrast between the sharply focused foreground and blurry background works well
- composition: the in-focus foreground at the bottom of the picture helps "frame" the cityscape background.
I do prefer the original, however, rather than the processing with Vintage Gold. I think the contrasting colours between the bird and cityscape work better; the Vintage Gold makes them too similar, and something of the beauty is lost.
Well done!

Great shot!

I think the vintage gold is a bit over the top though. I like the light in the original shot, the shadows in the 'vintage golded' image are too dark and the contrast too high for my liking.

Cheers,

Colin

This is an excellent photo. Thanks for the links to those actions. I like this image with or without the vintage gold action. Like Richard said, the sun on the feathers is spectacular. The Darter adds interest to an otherwise standard cityscape. Thanks for posting.

That is a really cool picture and I'm glad you found the "liveview" to be a useful feature. As far as the processing or not, I am quite undecided. I like how the backgound is more focused in the processed version...it almost give the bird more human-like qualities in my mind.
