discussion, gear, and photography journal
Last month, I spent two weeks working in Sydney. On the weekend, one of my colleagues, also a keen photographer, took me out to Katoomba, in the Blue Mountains, to take some photos of Wentworth Falls.

Wentworth Falls is located in the Blue Mountains National Park, a few kilometres east of the township of Katoomba. The total height of the falls is 187 metres, and the falls consist of several drops.

The walking trail down to the middle falls consists of 173 steps cut into the stone, down a 90 metre cliff face. Apparently it is the longest outdoor staircase in Australia!
The stone steps are creatively named the "Grand Stairway", and walking back up the many steps is definitely harder than walking down.

Below are a couple of photos (taken with my phone) showing the Grand Stairway.

Surprised our nanny state hasn't closed off tracks like this ;)

Lovely main shot. The water cascading at the top of the frame almost gives off a slight mystic feel to the shot. Great work Martin.

Martin Pot,

I very much enjoy your Photography Blog which I have just discovered - your photos and your reviews.

Canon's Online Store representatives told me Canon's Timer Remote Controller, TC-80N3, was compatible with a recently purchased Canon 60D camera so I made the purchase from Canon's Direct Store. When the Controller arrived I found it was not compatible as I now find can be determined from many internet postings. Canon will take the Controller back but I wonder if an adapter is available. Is there one? I don't want to change the connector on the cable as the Controller Timer can be used on another camera I have, a Canon 30D, if I decide to keep it.

I'd appreciate receiving your advice.

Thanks,

JJO

@JJO: Unfortunately, the advise you received from Canon's online store rep was incorrect.
The TC-80N3 remote has an N3 connector, while your 60D camera has an E3 socket (2.5mm stereo socket).

I'm not aware of anyone that sells an N3 female to E3 male adapter (you can get E3 female to N3 male, but that won't help you).

Depending on your level of expertise, you could potentially modify the TC-80N3 cable yourself, removing the N3 connector, and add an E3 connector.
If you also make up a short cable with an E3 female connector and N3 connector, you can still use the remote with both your 60D and your 30D, as described here.
(You can buy pre-modified TC-80N3 remotes from here.)

Alternatively, you may want to return the remote to Canon, and get one that comes with an E3 connector to suit your 60D.

You may want to consider getting something like the Phottix Nikos, which provides similar functionality as the TC-80N3. However, rather than having a hard-wired connector, you can can buy different cables for it, depending which camera you want to connect it to. You could then buy cables to suit your 30D (Phottix C8 cable, which has an N3 connector) and your 60D (Phottix C6 cable, which has an E3 connector), so you can use it with both cameras.

The Phottix Nikos is also quite a bit cheaper than the Canon TC-80N3.
