discussion, gear, and photography journal
The Red Bull Air Race took place in Perth last weekend. I spent some time on the river bank in South Perth on Saturday, shooting the action during the qualifying rounds.

I hired a 1.4x teleconverter for the day, to give me a longer reach, and definitely found it useful. At only $15 per day, the cost of hiring the teleconverter was definitely worthwhile!

The planes are great to watch, hurtling at over 300 km/h just a few metres above the river.

Here's a couple of my photos from Saturday.

So I'm gathering that you rented some sort of special lens for $15 for the day...my question is, how expensive are they to buy? Do you think you wouldn't use it enough to make it worth owning your own rather than renting one?

@Nick: I hired a 1.4x teleconverter, and used it with my 70-200mm f/4L Canon lens.
A teleconverter goes between the lens and the camera body, and provides additional enlargement (ie, 1.4x enlargement with a 1.4x teleconverter), but you lose one stop of aperture.

A 1.4x teleconverter used with a 70-200mm lens gives it an effective focal length of 98-280mm.

Note that you can also get 2x teleconverters (which will double the focal length), but that'll only work with the 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses, and not with the 70-200mm f/4 lenses.

A genuine Canon teleconverter retails for approx AUD$500, so hiring one for a day at AUD$15 is good value for money.

@Leo: I hired a teleconverter from Gerry Gibbs Camera House in Cannington last year.
