discussion, gear, and photography journal
We spent a week on holidays in Albany (south-west of Western Australia) in late December. While in Albany, I lifted my recently-purchased GoPro Hero2 camera aloft with my kite.

My first KAP session with the GoPro Hero2 was at Middleton Beach, and while the wind conditions were great, the lighting wasn't ideal, as it was getting a little too dark. The GoPro Hero2 seems to handle the low light conditions quite well, and I was quite happy with the results.

Here's a shot of the sunset over Mount Clarence, with Middleton Beach in the foreground.

As I let the kite and camera up in the air, I had the camera pointing at myself, and captured a few shots of myself, a nephew, and my brother.

Looking inland, this photo captured Lake Seppings, as well as the Albany golf course in the foreground.

What control do you have over the direction of the camera?

Martin wrote at 2012-01-09 07:22

@Colin: I can control the direction and tilt of the camera remotely via radio control.

Here's an annotated photo of the current KAP rig I'm using, showing the various components, including the RC receiver and servo:

I haven't (yet) got remote control of the GoPro camera's shutter, but am using the built-in intervalometer to trigger the shutter every 2 seconds.

I built this rig for a different camera (Canon PowerShot G5), but the GoPro HD Hero2 camera just fits in. I'm intending to build a more compact rig specifically for the GoPro HD Hero 2 camera in the future.

Hey Martin, thats awesome. How big is your kite, do you have a photo of that? Looking at the contraption holding the camera, I guess it would be quite large. This is similar to RC helicopters with camera's attached.

@Ken: Yup - it's a pretty big kite, and it has some serious pulling power in a decent wind!

It's a FlowForm 16, and has a surface area of 16 square feet (which is about 1.5 square metres), and has a 5 metre tail.

Here's a photo of me holding the kite, to give you an idea how big it is:

An RC helicopter would be great for aerial photography and video, but I'd prefer to have a hexacopter, as it provides more flexibility!

Really like the pictures of Albany, especially the one of the golf course since I love golf, I really enjoyed that one.

This is awesome Martin and the first I've seen of your 'KAP' project.
